Promoting Your Site

There are many ways of promoting your new site. You should include your domain name wherever possible in your "off-line" marketing materials to let the world know about your location on the Internet. Just some of the places you should think of including your domain name are:

  • Business cards
  • Stationary
  • Print advertising
  • Signs
  • Invoices
  • Proposals
  • T-shirts and caps
  • Novelty Advertising (pens and pencils)
  • Email signature files

All these things will help direct traffic to your site, the visitors that come to your site because of these things will be your "type in" traffic. That is, they got your web address from somewhere and actually typed it into their browser. As important as these visitors are, there is another much larger source of traffic to consider.

Search Engine Optimization

When people need to find something on the Internet they turn to search engines and directories, the work that is required to make your site the one they find is called "Search Engine Optimization".

First the definitions

A search engine is a website which is able to reach out and search the Internet using software "robots" which constantly prowl the web indexing the content. Examples of well know search engines include www.google.com and www.altavista.com.

A directory is a website which also provides a search function. The difference is that instead of using "robots" to create the index, humans add sites to the database using their own rules and categories. Examples of large directories are www.yahoo.com and www.looksmart.com.

Both are important

So which should you use? The important thing is to define the keywords or phrases you want your site to be associated with. For instance, if you sell candy on your site you might want to be found when someone types "candy" or "lollipops" into a search. You can further define likely and useful keywords by considering your customers. If your candy site is actually the online presence for a physical candy store then you may want to localize your efforts, a web surfer who is looking for candy in Memphis is a lot more likely to type in "Memphis candy store" than just "candy", knowing that the latter would return every candy store on the web.
